John Hetlinger never thought he’d end up where he is today. Hetlinger, 82, is a former Navy pilot, and was an aerospace engineer who headed up the team that repaired the Hubble Telescope. Now, he’s on America’s Got Talent.
Hetlinger, who began singing karaoke as a hobby, loved covering heavy metal songs, especially “Let the Bodies Hit the Floor” by the band Drowning Pool. Hetlinger decided to take his hobby to the next level and apply to be on America’s Got Talent. This month, he performed live in front of an audience of millions.
NO one expected what came next. Watch Hetlinger’s audition, and the reaction of the judges and the audience.
Shortly after Hetlinger performed, CJ Pierce, Drowning Pool’s guitarist, was informed by friends and family that some “radical old dude” had performed their song on AGT. Pierce was floored, telling reporters, “I watched it, and man, I am so entertained by it. It’s awesome to just see an 82-year-old man get out there and just belt out some metal.”
Hetlinger was invited by the band to perform with them at a show. He was an instant hit.
Watch Hetlinger perform “Bodies” with Drowning Pool.
Hetlinger, a Christian, was castigated by a Twitter user for performing with Drowning Pool because they have an inverted pentagram as part of their set backdrop.
The symbol is typically associated with Satanism.
Hetlinger gave the best comeback, explaining that he considers it “more like a Christian invading Satanic property.”
Now, the kicker? Not only is the 82-year-old a former Navy pilot who helped fix the Hubble Telescope, he’s also a conservative who supports Donald Trump.
Here are a few posts from his Facebook page.
He’s not a Cruz fan after his stunt at the convention.
Not a Hillary fan, either.
Hetlinger was eliminated from America’s Got Talent on July 20 when Heidi Klum “X’d” him. Simon Cowell stood to applaud him as did the audience. This is probably his best video yet.
Hetlinger performed a second show with Drowning Pool in Chicago in front of what he says was about 30,000 fans.
His videos are going viral, reaching 10s of millions. He’s all over the news, Colbert showed a clip of him on his show, and he’s been featured in Rolling Stone magazine among other publications. This guy is pure fun.
What a great way to reach millennials for Trump. I wonder if we could get him a gig like Diamond & Silk have?
