Freedom of speech is one of the fundamental pillars of American culture — but now that First Amendment right is under attack from outside the United States.
It was just revealed that an Islamic group is trying to use the United Nations to ban the right to criticize any religion, not matter how radical.
The International Union of Muslim Scholars, based in Qatar, is pressuring the U.N. to protect “prophets” such as Muhammad and to use international treaties to overrule free speech laws in countries like the United States.
According to the UK Daily Mail, IUMS demanded a “law criminalizing contempt of religions and the prophets and all the holy sites.”
In other words, they want it to be an international crime to express “contempt” for any radical religion or its leaders.
Disagree with Muslims who shout “Allahu Akbar” while they behead infidels? Too bad, you’re not allowed to speak out.
Want to question the so-called religion of Scientology or write a book criticizing Satanists? Where did you think you were, a free country?
Hilariously, the International Union of Muslim Scholars stated that the ban on free speech would be “to protect Muslim communities from attacks, whether they are citizens or residents or visitors” (H/T Mad World News).
It’s interesting that they’re not worried about brutal attacks committed by Muslims all over the globe. No, it’sclearly followers of radical Islam who are the blameless victims.
The move to eradicate free speech is essentially a step toward Shariah — the Islamic law that uses the Quran to impose harsh limits on nearly everything the civilized world believes in.
Throwing away freedom of speech to appease a radical religion would be a step back into the Dark Ages and away from civilization.
The ability of free individuals to speak their minds, even if somebody else disagrees, is not just an American tradition. It’s a human right.
