American Patriot: Bill O’Reilly

Bill O'Reilly

A Patriot is a person who loves, supports, and defends his or her country and its interests with devotion.”

The American Patriot Series acknowledges the activities of those individuals, celebrities, and/or groups who give their time, effort, and/or money to support our country’s active duty military personnel and veterans. Their actions identify them as a patriot and the purpose of this series is to recognize them as such.

Bill O’Reilly ( William James O’Reilly, Jr.) is most notably known as the host of The O’Reilly Factor, now in its 20th year. The Factor is currently the “#1 Cable TV News Show for 16 years – and counting!”

Along with his co-author, Martin Dugard, O’Reilly is also known as an author for his “Killing” series of books (in order: Killing Lincoln, Killing Kennedy, Killing Jesus, Killing Patton, Killing Reagan, and the just-released, Killing The Rising Sun). He has also authored the children books for each of the Killing books and has been Executive Producer of the movies made from these books.

But most importantly, O’Reilly has an online store where his books, premium memberships to The O’Reilly Factor, reproductions of our founding documents, and gear (shirts, ties, hats, pens, glasses, and coffee mugs) are sold. And from this endeavor, O’Reilly donates all of the proceeds from the store to 23 charities.

Ten of them are directly related to children and four are charities for active duty military personnel and veterans.

Fisher House Foundation is best known for a network of comfort homes where military and veterans’ families can stay at no cost while a loved one is receiving medical treatment at nearby major military or VA medical centers. These homes are located throughout the U.S.

Operation Shoebox sends care packages to our military personnel overseas.

Troops Direct spends over 90% of their donations of medical equipment, supplies, food supplements, personal items, and other needed items they ship to our military service members stationed overseas.

But it is the Independence Fund for which O’Reilly is most likely known. He was one of the first celebrities to mention their all terrain wheelchairs, more widely known as the trackchair, on The O’Reilly Factor:

No longer must our Veterans be confined to the pavement! Fishing, hunting, going to the beach, even playing with their own children in their backyard are all now possible – sweet Independence!”

Because of his historical support, the Independence Fund has recognized Bill with a special commendation on their website:

The Independence Fund sends our sincere thanks to Bill O’Reilly for his tireless advocacy on behalf of The Fund and our nation’s wounded Veterans. His support has enabled us to provide over 20 million dollars in direct support to America’s Heroes.”

Bill O’Reilly has been called many things during his career but no one can dispute his support for our active duty military personnel, veterans, and their families.
