Some people are calling this horrific crime ‘evil at it’s finest’. Gene Dacus was the ‘nicest guy in the neighborhood’.
Growing up in Georgia he joined the military to fight for America in the Korean War. After the war he moved himself, wife and kids (one disabled) to another state to care for his grandparents.
Mr. Gene as the neighbors call him , had such a big heart that after his wife passed away in 2005, he continued to care for his now 60-year-old disabled son alone. So that’s why what happened when a black teenager entered Mr. Gene’s property is so much more shocking.
The 85-yr old man was doused with gasoline and set on fire by 18-year-old Thomas Sims.
When a neighbor and relative of Gene Dacus started to smell smoke then saw fire coming from the back yard of Dacus’s house, they became concerned. They figured that Mr. Gene’s RV had caught fire. Then witnesses saw a young black man running through a nearby alleyway with a red gasoline jug. They called and reported that someone was on fire, the police arrived just after 12am. They found Mr. Gene burned to death in the back of his home.
Police were able to locate and arrest Thomas Sims just down the street from the crime scene.
Lt. Sean Edwards said that they have learned that the victim and suspect had and argument before suspect set Mr. Gene on fire.
“This homicide shocks the conscience of any reasonable person. Our hearts are hurting for the victim, his family and our community,” said Birmingham police Chief A.C. Roper. “The suspect actually confessed to this crime but we have not received any logical justification to explain what happened.
Neighbor Helen McComb said she was at her nearby home late Tuesday night when she heard a commotion outside and went on her front porch to investigate. “I could see something burning,” she said. “Then a guy ran out yelling somebody had burned up Mr. Gene.”
Something like this is so clearly blatant and horrific. Do you see any rallies or protests against thugs like this to support Mr. Gene? Nope. It doesn’t fit into the media and BLM rhetoric that young black men are innocent and just want to be left alone and live their lives.
