Macyo Joelle January murdered military Staff SGT. David Dunlap and his pregnant wife, Whitney Butler, when they walking in on him robbing their home.
Dunlap and Butler returned to their Colorado Springs home on January 14 (2013) to check on their alarm which had suddenly went off.
When they arrived, Dunlap, 37, was shot in the head. His wife, Butler, 35, was shot in the head while she leaned over his body.
A jury recently deliberated for hours after the 2.5 year long case and found January guilty of the murder and burglary. He is not guilty of murdering their unborn child.
He was sentenced as an adult, even though he was 17 at the time of the crime. 4th Judicial District Court Judge Deborah Grohs on Wednesday handed him back-to-back life sentences for the double shooting and he has a chance of parole after 80 years. Typically a criminal convicted of this crime is eligible for parole after 40 years, but he murdered two people, so he received consecutive sentences. He most likely will be in prison for at least 80 years.
However, he also has two consecutive 32-year sentences for burglary that he must serve after he’s finished the first 80 years.
January could be in prison for about 144 years.
His entire life is gone because he wanted to steal a few things, but ended up shooting a newlywed couple and essentially killed a baby in the process.
All for what?
A lesson to everyone out there. Please don’t do things like this. Not only do you take the life of others, but you ruin your own life too.
There’s nothing in someone’s house that you could steal that would be worth spending 100+ years in prison and throwing your entire life away. Nothing at all. No amount of money could be stolen, jewels, items, or anything is worth spending 100+ years in prison.
It’s not worth it. There’s no point to throw away your life and take three others on the way.
Makes you wonder what his parents were like and how they failed to raise a child who can make better decisions.
Here’s a video from after the sentencing.
Daily Mail – Macyo Joelle January, 19, was found guilty of murdering Staff Sgt. David Dunlap, 37, and his pregnant wife Whitney Butler, 35, after the two walked in on him burglarizing their Colorado Springs home Jan. 14, 2013.
Police say that the newlyweds arrived home separately to check on the alarm that went off at 11.10am.
A jury deliberated for three-and-a-half hours and the case that went on for 1 1/2 years — overlapping what would have been the couple’s two-year anniversary — ended with January being found guilty of the slayings.
