President Barack Obama took a lot of credit during the 2012 presidential campaign for killing 9/11 mastermind and Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden — but that was never his goal.
In fact, the president wanted bin Laden taken prisoner and put on trial for the 9/11 attacks.
Journalist Mark Bowden, author of “Black Hawk Down,” documented the president’s goals during an interview for his book, “The Finish.”
Obama told Bowden that he expected bin Laden to “go down fighting” during the May, 2011, raid on his Abbottabad, Pakistan, compound by U.S. Navy SEALS.
Which means that he was wrong twice. The idea of giving bin Laden criminal rights under the U.S. judicial system is nothing short of abhorrent, and bin Laden died hiding behind a woman like the coward he was.
“Frankly, my belief was if we had captured him, that I would be in a pretty strong position, politically, here, to argue that displaying due process and rule of law would be our best weapon against al-Qaida, in preventing him from appearing as a martyr,” Obama told Bowden, according to a report in the U.K. Telegraph (H/T The Elder Statement).
Obama claimed that giving bin Laden “the full rights of criminal defendants would showcase America’s commitment to justice for even the worst of the worst,” Bowden added, according to the report.
This just goes to prove how the president’s dogmatic blinders keep him oblivious to the truth that most Americans see as obvious.
Osama bin Laden’s death was the perfect showcase of America’s commitment to justice.
