In 2011, the Arab Spring swept through the Middle East and North Africa, sparking revolutions that toppled several governments, including that of Egypt, which was subsequently replaced by the Muslim Brotherhood.
However, Egyptians quickly realized their mistake in allowing the Muslim Brotherhood to seize power, and yet another uprising occurred, with the Egyptian military overthrowing the abusive theocratic regime of Mohamed Morsi, replacing him with the benevolently moderate Gen. Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.
Unfortunately for America’s ally, the Obama administration doesn’t see the Muslim Brotherhood the same way, and has reached out to support the radical Islamic group, even inviting them into the highest levels of our government, including the White House.
According to Gatestone Institute, these actions by the Obama administration have led many Egyptians, along with other moderate Muslims and Arabs in the region, to view America as being something of an ally to the terrorists.
At the heart of the issue is the recent visit to the State Department of a contingent of Muslim Brotherhood members, including influential judge Waleed Sharaby.
“If the White House is out to offend some of its closest Arab allies and is intent on heightening their suspicions, it’s succeeded,” said Middle East expert Linda S. Heard. “If there’s a plot, then it’s unfolding.”
Heard pointed out that just days after the visit, the Brotherhood declared open war against the people of Egypt.
A statement released by the Muslim Brotherhood read, “It is incumbent upon everyone to be aware that we are in a process of a new phase, where we summon what is latent our strength, where we recall the meanings of jihad and prepare ourselves, our wives, our sons, our daughters, and whoever marched on our path to a long, uncompromising fight, and during this stage we ask for martyrdom.”
Egypt’s Foreign Minister Same Shoukry was furious about the meeting, publicly denouncing it.
“The Muslim Brotherhood is not a political party, but according to the Egyptian law, which must be respected, it is designated as a terrorist organization,” he said.
Egyptian newspapers have long been critical of the Obama administration, even going so far as to accuse Obama of being an actual member of the Brotherhood.
On top of that, both Obama and Hillary Clinton have been charged in Egyptian court with providing aid to the terrorist group.
Based on Obama’s actions and outreach towards the Brotherhood, Egyptians can hardly be blamed for making such a connection.
“The U.S. Administration has refused to recognize the Muslim Brotherhood as a terror group,” said Said Lindawi, an expert on Egyptian international affairs.
“The Americans continue to insist that the Muslim Brotherhood is not responsible for the terrorist attacks in Egypt,” Lindawi added.
Moderate Arabs and Muslims are now viewing America as an ally to terrorist groups, instead of being an ally to the moderates working towards stability and reform.
Is it then any wonder that America is roundly hated as duplicitous and deceitful by much of the Middle East?
