One unfortunate consequence of losing a loved one, especially if the deceased was the bread-winner of the household, is not knowing if you’ll have a roof over your head and groceries for the kids.
Luckily, thanks to thousands of supporters and one of the tightest brotherhoods around, the widows of assassinated officers Wenjien Liu and Rafael Ramos won’t have to worry about such material things.
An organization by the name of Steven Siller Tunnels to Towers Foundation, a group that was organized after 9/11 to “honor the sacrifice of firefighter Stephen Siller who laid down his life to save others on September 11, 2001,” has headed a massive effort to raise enough funds to pay of the mortgages of both fallen officers’ homes. By doing that, it allows both wives and children to focus on healing and moving on without the burden of scrambling to pay bills and wondering where the money will come from.
“We want to help lift them out of some of the despair that they’re in today,” Frank Siller said at a press conference earlier today.
In an unprecedented move, former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani donated $20,000 of his own money to kick-start the fundraising effort.
“They should be in a position where, so that for he rest of their lives, they never have to worry about material things. It doesn’t bring back either one of these great men. But it does help,” Giuliani said at the presser.
The funraising goal was set at $800,000 and according to the organization’s official Twitter account, the latest total from the first day of efforts raised a staggering $120,000.
With a few A-list celebrity retweets, there’s no doubt the organization could hit their goal relatively quickly. This needs to spread like wildfire.
