Last week the Obama administration abdicated their vote for an anti-Israel resolution that won with overwhelming approval. While the ambassador to the United Nations had the opportunity to use veto power, they did not. The Washington Free Beacon reports that the current administration is planning to take more action against Israel prior to the President Elect assuming office. Now Congress is looking to cut American funding to the United Nations as a result.
Another action being considered is expelling Palestinian diplomats who are on United States soil. As well as scaling back any and all ties with foreign nations that voted in favor of the measure. This is all according to several sources. But considering the large number of people who supported the resolution cutting off all ties with every one of them would not be a likely option.
The resolution condemns the construction of Jewish homes in Jerusalem. Which is a contested territory. This is a reversal from our policy on Israel in prior years. Members of the Obama administration played a vital role in ensuring the resolution unanimously passed at the United Nations Security Council. It is rumored that Vice President Joe Biden even called the Ukrainian President to ensure the country voted for the resolution.
However, the Vice President’s office has disputed this claim. But reporters across Europe and in Israel have confirmed the phone call took place between Biden and President Petro Poroshenko. Congressmen and women have made it clear they are seeking retribution for what the Obama administration has done to Israel.
They are also looking to quell further chastisements from the Obama administration against Israel on the international stage. Thus, they are looking to freeze American funding to the United Nations. Leading these efforts is Senator Ted Cruz who stated the following,
“The disgraceful anti-Israel resolution passed by the UNSC was apparently only the opening salvo in the Obama administration’s final assault on Israel. President Obama, Secretary Kerry, Ambassador Power, and their colleagues should remember that the United States Congress reconvenes on January 3rd, and under the Constitution we control the taxpayer funds they would use for their anti-Israel initiatives.
The 115th Congress must stop the current administration’s vicious attack on our great ally Israel, and address the major priorities of the incoming administration.”
Cruz maintained he wishes to work with the Trump administration to reset the Israeli-American relationship and ensure the relationship remains strong. Anonymous senior congressional sources are reported to the Free Beacon that both Democrat and Republican lawmakers are furious over what President Obama has done. One senior congressional aide said the following,
“Not content with spending the last eight years using the United Nations to undermine American sovereignty, the Obama administration has finally trained their sights on Israel and is trying to exploit this un-elected and unaccountable international body to impose their resolution of the Palestinian issue on Israel. Enough is enough.”
A full cut off of funding is definitely on the table sources indicate. Congress will do everything in its power over the next month to ensure relations with Israel do not deteriorate prior to then and that more anti-Israeli resolutions are not passed. The source said,
“A new administration will arrive on January 20th, but in the intervening weeks Congress has an important role mitigating the damage President Obama can do in his final hours. Why on earth would we throw good taxpayer dollars after bad in support of the UN, which has proven itself again and again utterly unable to encourage any positive progress? Just take Syria — if they were doing anything over the last five years, it should have been working out a fair and equitable adjudication of the Syrian war.”
Instead, they’ve proven themselves utterly useless–in fact they’ve probably made a gut-wrenching catastrophe worse. There’s no reason to think this action will turn out any more favorably.”
Another senior congressional aide made comments to reporters anonymously under the threat of serious repercussions. His comments insinuated this resolution targets Israel directly. Read here,
“The question now is whether this was the finale or the prologue of what this administration has planned against Israel. Everything is on the table right now — including funding cuts and scaling back diplomatic relations with countries that brought forward this resolution.”
Since the President has taken office he has played party politics to the detriment of Israel. Often siding with Palestinian terrorists who commit terrible acts of terrorism against Jewish settlements. This is contrary to the conservative stance.
Spoke w/ Israeli PM @netanyahu tonight to wish him Happy Chanukah & assure him of strong support in Congress. No US $ for UN until reversed.
