From Truth Revolt: Giving a full-throated defense for letting in Syrian refugees to his state, Dallas, Texas Mayor Mike Rawlings said he just so happens to be more afraid of white guys with guns showing up and shooting people at schools and theaters.
Speaking on MSNBC Saturday, Rawlings took issue with Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s request to block these refugees as a means to protect the state from harboring any terrorist that may be among them. But Rawlings said that is just playing into ISIS’s hands:
isis wants us to be divided on this issue. isis wants us to demonize these Syrian refugees, wants us to alienate these children. We’ve got to build a coalition of Middle Eastern states and we need to reach out. They’re Muslims and we have got to use the words carefully to show them that we care about them. isis is no more Islamic than the Nazi senior staff was Christian. And so, we’ve got to differentiate between those.
Saying words matter in this issue, Rawlings said “Christ followers,” like himself, need to carefully examine how the United States is to treat these “strangers.” If they are refused, he surmises, they will feel looked on as “bad people.”
Anchor Chris Jansing asked Rawlings if he feels at all concerned about the possibility of terrorists slipping in with the crowd. And though he recognizes that as a reasonable worry, Rawlings is more confident that white Americans are going to go on a shooting rampage:
There is never a 100% guarantee. And safety is my number one concern, as it is Gov. Abbott’s. We’ve got to make sure they’re safe. This is a 21-step process to get in — 18-24 months to jump through these hoops. This is a serious issue.
I am more fearful of large gatherings of young white men that come into schools, theaters and shoot people up. But we don’t isolate young white men on this issue.
