Experts are turning to digital evidence to debunk the beheading video of the Islamic State’s latest victim. Medical experts believe that former Army Ranger Peter Kassig was actually shot before his head was cut off in the ISIS propaganda film, matching up to the popular theory that he may have resisted his captors before he was murdered.
Researchers have examined the propaganda closely and have noticed several things that were amiss in the video. Unlike the victims in the previous propaganda videos, Kassig’s full body is not shown in the footage until after he was already dead. Additionally, Kassig failed to speak directly to the camera before being executed.
Discrepancies in the way the sun was cast in comparison to the shadows in the film indicate that Jihadi John may have been superimposed into the scene, who is shown standing in the Syrian desert with Kassig’s bloodied and bruised head at his feet.
According to digital analyst Charlie Winter:
“The analyst categorically believes that the shadows were added, and added poorly,” Winter said in an interview with The Telegraph.
Analysis of the video also revealed a bruise over Kassig’s eye, suggesting that he was shot before the video was made.
“We have had a senior face and neck surgeon independently look at some of the screenshots we took. His initial assessment was that a contusion (a bruise) above Mr Kassig’s left eye was a gunshot wound. Closer analysis of the wound reinforced that initial assessment, leading him to believe that the wound was probably the cause of death, rather than beheading.”
Research on the propaganda video has already revealed that it was edited with a sophisticated software package known as Avid, which is used in Hollywood production to digitally edit and enhance real-life footage to add special effects.
Complete analysis on the video is due to be published sometime this week by the US-basedTerrorism Research and Analysis Consortium (TRAC).
Reports have claimed that Jjihadi John may have been killed or badly injured after the US conducted airstrikes last month in the western Iraq city of Qaim, which would explain why ISIS would go to such great lengths to digitally edit the propaganda video by superimposing the beheader into the video. Or perhaps Jihadi John he is still alive, and the creative editing was because Kassig, in true Army Ranger form, refused to comply with the demands of the Islamic State and instead chose to fight them. The last two sections of the Ranger Creedseem to possibly embody Kassig’s actions in the final moments of his life.
“Energetically will I meet the enemies of my country. I shall defeat them on the field of battle for I am better trained and will fight with all my might. Surrender is not a Ranger word. I will never leave a fallen comrade to fall into the hands of the enemy and under no circumstances will I ever embarrass my country.”
“Readily will I display the intestinal fortitude required to fight on to the Ranger objective and complete the mission though I be the lone survivor.”
