President Obama just returned from vacation, as he apparently can’t be bothered with mundane matters like the catastrophe occurring in Louisiana as record flood waters are finally beginning to recede. In total, he took a sixteen day vacation in Martha’s Yineyard – and he isn’t even speaking in the region until Tuesday.
In an anguished editorial, the Baton Rouge paper The Advocate begs President Obama to visit the flood-ravaged communities. But until now, the president had shown little interest in interrupting his golfing and socializing to do his job. He didn’t mind to interrupt his vacation a little over a week ago to speak at a fundraiser for Hillary Clinton, catering to high-end donors.
With Obama snoozing and Hillary resting, it has fallen to Donald Trump to be the one to act presidential. He visited flooding areas of Louisiana himself. A photo op is exactly what Louisiana (and the Trump campaign, for that matter) needed. Trump’s visit will draw attention to the state, which will lead to more donations.
Trump could take advantage of this situation – if the media would allow it. But you’re not going to read much about an absent Obama or absent Hillary Clinton after Trump’s visit.
Don’t be fooled however, the residents of Louisiana know exactly what’s going on. They know that the same President who hounded George W. Bush for his response to Hurricane Katrina is now ignoring them.
In 16 pages of rules and regulations, the Justice Department warned Louisiana recipients of federal disaster assistance against “unlawful discrimination on the basis of race, color, or national origin (including limited English proficiency).”
The edit was sent to citizens as they desperately tried to save belongings or coped with life in emergency shelters to “highlight the importance of complying with non-discrimination requirements of civil rights statutes, addressing the needs of the whole community, and ensuring equal opportunity to access recovery efforts.”
After one man from Louisiana read the rule book that was so callously thrown at them in place of help, Rob Dreher decided to let Washington know just how he felt. The following is what he wrote to the American Conservative earlier this week:
“Where are you people now, when everywhere you look you can find black folks and white folks loving on each other, helping each other through this crisis?”
“The Department of Justice and many other agencies of the executive branch overseen by He Who Cannot Be Troubled To Leave Martha’s Vineyard issued a long bureaucratic memo on Tuesday lecturing us that we had better not discriminate against people in our disaster relief efforts,” he bristled.
“After spending a day in a shelter and around the city watching local law enforcement, the National Guard, and others busting their butts to help people of all races, to see that memo made me furious,” Dreher also wrote.
“Is that really what you think of us? That we’re just a bunch of rednecks dying to discriminate?” he continued.
Obama only pretends to care about people when it’s politically convenient. He’s running down the clock on his final year in office, and with no third term to campaign for, he no longer has to even pretend.
