From BizPac:

A uniformed Georgia police officer was escorted out of the classroom of a college course he was attending for wearing one essential item of his uniform — his firearm.

An instructor at Darton State College in Albany, Georgia claimed that classrooms aren’t the place for guns — even in the case of a law enforcement officer who is also a student — and asked that he be escorted out Wednesday, according to local NBC affiliate WALB 10 News.

ALBANY, GA (WALB) –

On Wednesday, a police officer was escorted from a classroom at Darton State College.

The officer is a student at the college, and was wearing his full police uniform.

The teacher was reportedly uncomfortable with having a gun in the classroom, and asked the officer to be escorted out.

The college has since issued a statement saying:

Darton State College is appreciative for the service of our law enforcement, and welcome them as students on our campus. We have apologized to the officer for our misunderstanding when he attended class on our campus, and we regret this happened. We have met with the faculty and staff involved to reiterate the Georgia Law and Darton Policy.”

– Dr. Thomas Ormond, Interim Provost/VP for Academic & Student Affairs, Darton State College.

Neither the student/police officer nor the instructor was named.

Police officers in many jurisdictions are required to be armed at all times, including when the officer is off-duty and out of uniform.
