Last night, the Walt Disney Company fired Curt Schilling. ESPN, for whom Schilling worked, is an 80 percent owned subsidiary of Disney. Schilling was fired for sharing a social media meme that showed a scary looking man going into a women’s restroom. While the company finds a social media meme offensive, it is conducting business in Arab countries like the United Arab Emirates that prescribe the death penalty for male homosexual acts. That is quite the double standard.
Disney’s corporate interests run deep in Dubai, one of the United Arab Emirates. The Walt Disney Company Limited-Dubai branch is the registered address for DisneyMe.com, which is the website for United Kingdom-based Disney activities. The company’s “About Us” page lists Floor Seven of the Al Sufouh Building complex in Dubai as its address.
The company is also currently advertising for a Product Development Associate Manager in Dubai. Here’s the job description:

Disney’s biggest profit may come from a “Disney Live” show that recently ran in Dubai. The production started its run on April 6, 2016.
Mickey Mouse and his friends are back! Disney Live! Mickey’s Music Festival will return to the UAE for a four-day run starting April 6 at the Dubai World Trade Centre. Featuring the entire gang including Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Goofy, the interactive show will see 25 well-known characters performing songs from some of best known Disney blockbusters — from Aladdin to The Little Mermaid and Toy Story. The show opened in Abu Dhabi in 2014.
There is a law in the United Arab Emirates that penalizes male sodomy with death. There is some disagreement on whether that punishment has been meted in recent years or if the law goes beyond male rape.
Disney has done business with other countries that have a death penalty for homosexual acts. Euro Disney, in Paris, is partly owned by Saudi Prince Alwaleed. According to the Washington Post, under Saudi Arabia’s “interpretation of sharia law, a married man engaging in sodomy or any non-Muslim who commits sodomy with a Muslim can be stoned to death.”
The Guardian reported in 2010 that no executions had been carried out since 2002 of gays convicted of homosexual acts. The laws, however, remain on the books. In more recent years the penalty has been jail time and lashings.
In 2013, the Gulf Cooperation Council reportedly proposed a test to determine the sexual orientation of visitors to Gulf Countries. If the test came back positive, under the proposal the individual would be denied entry. Saudi Arabia and the UAE are members of the GCC.
The tests were announced by Yousouf Mindkar, director of public health at the Kuwaiti health ministry, who said that the routine clinical screening of expatriates coming into the Gulf Cooperation Countries (GCC) will include measures to identify LGBT people who will then be banned from entering the country.
“Health centres conduct the routine medical check to assess the health of the expatriates when they come into the GCC countries,” he told local daily Al Rai. “However, we will take stricter measures that will help us detect gays who will be then barred from entering Kuwait or any of the GCC member states.”
Homosexuals acts are banned in all the GCC member countries, which include Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
The proposals were not instituted.
It is quite obvious that Disney is willing to fire its own employees for personal opinions regarding whether or not men should be allowed in the same restrooms as young girls, yet openly does business in countries that have the death penalty for homosexual acts.
