(Conservative Tribune) A leaked Defense Department memorandum seems to indicate that previous assurances that U.S. troops will not come in contact with Ebola patients during their deployment to West Africa may be untrue.

The 19-page memo provides guidance on training for military and DOD civilians, including provisions for individuals who will come into contact with the “exposed remains” of those who have died from the hemorrhagic fever.

Undersecretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness Jessica L. Write issued the document, according to WND. It includes descriptions of three training levels but does not specific whether levels II and III, which include provisions for possible exposure to the virus, are meant for U.S. troops, DOD civilians, or both.

Level II training will be provided to personnel who are expected to “interact with the local populace” and Level III for those “assigned to supporting medical units or expected to handle exposed remains.”

If U.S. servicemen and women complete either level II or III training, which is unclear from the document, it would appear to contradict previous administration statements that the 4,000 U.S. troops deployed to West Africa to help combat the outbreak of the deadly virus would do so only in support roles.

Those expected to be exposed to the virus will understandably receive more intensive training prior to deployment.

It comes as no surprise that yet another possible contradiction exists in the Obama administration’s response to the Ebola outbreak. Travel restrictions would impair our ability to fight the virus, Americans were told just prior to the administration imposing travel restrictions. Quarantines are unnecessary, they said just before announcing that military members returning to the United States would be quarantined for 21 days.

Was somebody expecting that the Obama administration would suddenly wake up from a good night’s sleep with something resembling competence?

We wish.
