Michelle Obama has made a lot of headlines for her “fashion” sense. While the media insists that she’s a style icon, most people look at her outfits and can see for themselves that she’s been a fashion disaster. So when one of Michelle Obama’s designers, Sophie Theallet, announced that she refused to dress Melania Trump, the reaction was mostly laughter and scorn. And now, it’s come back to bite her, big time.
Theallet released an open letter explaining her decision. In it, she wrote, “As one who celebrates and strives for diversity, individual freedom and respect for all lifestyles, I will not participate in dressing or associating in any way with the next first lady. The rhetoric of racism, sexism and xenophobia unleashed by her husband’s presidential campaign are incompatible with the shared values we live by. I encourage my fellow designers to do the same.”
“I am well aware it is not wise to get involved in politics,” she continued. “That said, as a family-owned company, our bottom line is not just about money. We value our artistic freedom and always humbly seek to contribute to a more humane, conscious and ethical way to create in this world.”
Other designers came forward to defend Melania though, like icon Tommy Hilfiger. “I think Melania is a very beautiful woman and I think any designer should be proud to dress her,” Hilfiger said. “Ivanka is equally as beautiful and smart, although she wears her own clothes. I don’t think people should become political about it. Everyone was very happy to dress Michelle [Obama] as well. I think they look great in the clothes. You’re not gonna get much more beautiful than Ivanka or Melania.”
Hilfiger isn’t the only designer that has been happy to dress Melania. During the campaign, Melania was spotted wearing designs from Ralph Lauren, Fendi, Gucci, Michael Kors, and Dolce & Gabbana. Let’s be real — Melania won’t be missing out on wearing Theallet’s creations when she can wear much more well-known and respected designers’ clothes instead.
