Michelle Obama gave a speech at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania this week and is being lauded by many politicians. Once again she repeats one of her infamous lines that landed her in hot water a little while back.
“I wake up every day in a house that was built by slaves. And I watch my daughters, two beautiful, intelligent Black young women, playing with their dogs on the White House lawn.”
For people that talk about the issue of racism being so prevalent she sure likes to qualify and differentiate herself and her kids as black. Which is a textbook racist thing to do. The sad part is what she said isn’t even true.
The White House wasn’t entirely built by slaves. Many builders included white laborers and artisans as well as European immigrants from Ireland, Scotland and other countries. Slaves came into the picture when the lime based whitewashing of the building began to take place.
What she also failed to mention was that the United States federal government paid the slaves to do their work.
A a writer for IJR noted,
“This is in addition to the fact that Mrs. Obama is herself a multi-millionaire, along with her Presidential husband, a graduate of Harvard University who is herself a walking symbol of the success that can come to anyone who is willing to work hard and apply one’s talent in America.
In other words, even as Michelle Obama herself rebukes the nation’s history of racism, she is a living example that America has done much to overcome it.”
The Obamas have always had a fuzzy and infrequent relationship with the truth. Because they always like to make sure that a good story gets in the way of the real truth. After all, who doesn’t like a storyteller.
