Wow! This mother & off-duty deputy are heroes. Surveillance video caught the harrowing struggle between a mom and a would-be kidnapper.
A mother was shopping at a Dollar General store in Hernando, Florida on Tuesday. Her 13-year-old daughter was with her.
Suddenly, a man, Craig Bonello, grabbed the woman’s daughter and tried to drag her out of the store.
The woman’s motherly instinct to protect her young one instantly kicked in. The woman, who is not being named out of concern for her safety, ran after Bonello, desperately trying to free her daughter.
The mother engaged in an epic tug-of-war with Bonello over the 13-year-old. She would eventually lay on top of her daughter in an attempt to stop Bonello from getting her outside.
Eventually Bonello gave up and ran outside to his car. An off-duty sheriff’s deputy, Jonathan Behnen, just happened to be pulling in to the store’s parking lot.
The store manager yelled to Behnen that Bonello had just tried to kidnap a child. Behnen positioned his cruiser in front of Bonello’s car, blocking him in.
According to Fox 13, Behnen pulled his service weapon and ordered Bonello to exit his vehicle. Fox 13 reports that Bonello “hesitated” at first, but then got out of his car, at which point Behnen placed him under arrest.
Bonello was arrested in February for trespassing at a Wal-Mart store, according to the Daily Mail. Fox 13 reports that sheriff’s deputies have arrested Bonello numerous times. He’s been arrested for firing a gun into a building, assaulting an emergency responder, and resisting arrest. Bonello was charged with aggravated battery on a police officer in 2009. Bonello is not registered as a sex offender.
Bonello is being charged with kidnapping and child abuse.
Thank God this mother fought back, and for deputy Behnen being in the right place at the right time. There’s no telling what would have happened if this pos would have escaped with the young girl.
