The threat of terrorism is always real. One incident that almost took place is a potent reminder of that fact. A man living in Denver, Colorado was caught with explosives, guns, and knives in his hotel room. He was raised in St. Louis, Missouri in an upper-middle-class family prior to enlisting in the Marine Corps.
In his hotel room, investigators found the word explosives written on his mirror. They eventually found pipe bombs. It took place at the Sheraton Denver Downtown. A few guests had to be relocated due to the events that took place.

His name is Adam Hayat. Luckily, the bombs were found inside an ammunition case which was inside the room’s locked safe. Now he is being charged with one count of possession of firearms. All because he had not registered them with the National Firearm and Registration Transfer Record. Police took him into custody near Los Angeles airport on Friday.
Via the Denver Post:
A 35-year-old former Marine accused of leaving pipe bombs at the Sheraton Denver Downtown on Wednesday had written the word “explosives” on the closet door mirror in his hotel room, where empty rifle shell casings and several metal pipes were strewn.
The bombs were inside an ammunition case in the room’s safe.
Adam Nauveed Hayat, is accused of one count of possession of firearms not registered with the National Firearms and Registration Transfer Record. He was arrested Friday in Los Angeles — near that city’s airport — without incident.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Colorado says the charge carries up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
Federal authorities say Hayat was renting room 1902 at the Sheraton. Police were called and the explosives were found after hotel staff stumbled upon a “suspicious incident.”
The pipe bombs were taken to the Denver Police Department’s bomb range and disposed of.
Investigators have been mum on Hayat’s arrest, however, ABC News reports that Hayat, who is an American citizen of Pakistani descent, was found with knives after apparently flying to Los Angeles.
ABC did some digging and had reported that Hayat is of Pakistani descent but is an American citizen. His father, Sultan Hayat, spoke to Denver7 where he blamed his son’s behavior on mental illness, bipolar disorder, and residual PTSD. He said,
“Police called this morning from Denver, and I talked to them. They said he had bought some firearms, and they were concerned that he may hurt himself or someone else.”
His son’s bill had come to around $10,000 by the time he was arrested. But now the case has turned over to the Federal Bureau of Investigation due to the nature of the crime. People like this should be punished to the fullest extent of the law. Mental illness is not an excuse to commit acts of terror.
It should not be a get out of jail free card. If we ran society like that then nobody would be safe. People need to be held responsible for their actions.
