Fox News announced last week that they plan to reveal the identity of the Navy SEAL who killed Osama Bin Laden in a two-part documentary scheduled to air later this month.
But the Obama administration does not want this information revealed, as they were quick to issue a statement saying that the SEAL could face criminal charges for participating in the documentary, as it violates the service member’s previously signed voluntary NDA (Non-Disclosure Agreement). Navy Commander and Defense Department spokeswoman Amy Derrick-Frost stated that although the military had not confirmed that the SEAL was actually the one who issued the fatal shot to Bin Laden, the NDA would prevent the SEAL from taking part in an interview:
“As a private citizen, former or retired service members are free to speak with the media and exercise their First Amendment rights. However, it is important for all former service members to adhere to their signed NDA’s when they seek to openly discuss classified or sensitive information, or make claims about their active duty operations or accomplishments.”
The spokeswoman went on to say that compliance with the NDA is a lifelong obligation meant to protect “national defense information.”
Let’s not forget that this is the same administration who released the names of all SEAL Team Six members (which was classified information) shortly after the raid on Bin Laden’s compound back in 2011. Families of the SEAL members believe that the leaking of this information is what caused their deaths, as three months later members of SEAL Team Six were among the 38 killed in a Chinook helicopter crash in Afghanistan.
It is understandable that service members should maintain secrecy about certain details in order to preserve our national defense. But remember, this is not some recruit fresh out of Basic Training. This is a member of one of the most elite military fighting units the world has ever seen. These guys are smart and highly trained, oftentimes working undercover in some of the most dangerous places in the world. I think he knows a little something about the importance of national security.
So why is this Administration so worried about the shooter doing an interview with Fox News?
How can releasing the identity of the one who killed Bin Laden pose any threat to our national security?
Why is the Obama administration so determined to keep this a secret from the American people?
One final thought comes to mind as I ponder these questions. As a member of the military, this SEAL took an oath to “Support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same.” Perhaps this SEAL feels a sense of duty and obligation to ensure that the people of the United States know the truth.
