Most Americans celebrated the news of Fidel Castro’s death. The knowledge that a brutal, murderous tyrant will no longer be able to terrorize and oppress innocent people was welcome news to most people. The only exception was liberals, who have been mourning the loss of the dictator, including Barack Obama. Obama and his fellow Democrats actually praised Castro for “service” to his people. Now the only question is, will Obama attend Castro’s funeral?
After Castro died, Obama released an insulting statement praising him:
With those kind of accolades, it wouldn’t be surprising if Obama hopped a flight to the island to pay his “friend” one final visit. Obama visited the island nation earlier this year. He was the first president to do so since 1928.
The BBC reported on the trip that took place in March:
For decades, the US and Cuba were engaged in a bitter stand-off, triggered by the overthrow of US-backed Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista by Communist leader Fidel Castro in 1959.
The US broke off diplomatic relations and imposed a trade embargo.
But President Obama undertook two years of secret talks which led to the announcement in December 2014 that the two countries would restore diplomatic relations.
Since then, there have been a series of symbolic moments, such as the first formal meeting of Presidents Obama and Castro at a regional summit in Panama and the opening of embassies in Havana and Washington DC.
Presidents Obama and Castro shook hands at the Palace of the Revolution in Havana ahead of their bilateral meeting on Monday.
Keep in mind, Castro was a man who jailed, tortured, and murdered people simply for speaking out against him. Right up until his death, he was jailing thousands of dissidents. In Cuba, there is no access to the internet for your average Cuban citizen. There is no freedom of press, no freedom of speech. Most of the people live in extreme poverty while the Castros enjoy their hundreds of millions of dollars. Yet Obama can’t praise this guy enough.
Marco Rubio, whose parents escaped the Castro regime by fleeing to the United States, slammed the Obama administration for their response to his death, and implored Obama to not send anyone to the funeral. “While you may want to open up to Cuba, there’s no reason we should be opening up to Fidel Castro’s legacy of anti-Americanism, of murder, of dictatorship, of imprisonment, of exile, which is what his legacy is all about,” Rubio said. He insisted that sending a delegation to Castro’s funeral would show that Obama wants to honor a dictator that murdered American citizens.
Trump, meanwhile, celebrated Castro’s death:
Fidel Castro is dead!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) November 26, 2016
In a statement, Trump said, “Fidel Castro’s legacy is one of firing squads, theft, unimaginable suffering, poverty and the denial of fundamental human rights.”
All of what Trump said is true. Yet according to sources within the White House, Obama is still considering attending Castro’s funeral himself. Advisers are allegedly begging him not to go, but he isn’t listening. The sources say that Obama wants to “keep the relationship with Cuba on good terms.” He doesn’t seem to care that most Cubans are happy that Castro is dead. It’s utterly insane that he is even thinking about going, but here we are.
Thank goodness Obama is going to be out of office soon.
