From Conservative Tribune: We’ve all seen the shocking, horrifying images of the riots in Baltimore on TV: a city being torn apart, cars being smashed, scores of buildings on fire.
Well, scratch that — almost all of us have seen those images.
Perhaps the president hasn’t had time to pay attention or simply watched only a few minutes of Baltimore coverage. Either way, Obama played down the riots during his remarks from the White House, saying that it was more a case of “one burning building … looped on television over and over.”
Yes, that’s right. According to the president of our United States — the man giving a speech on the riots in Baltimore — those riots essentially didn’t happen.
Obama tried to minimize the damage from the riots, saying that “the violence that happened yesterday distracted from the fact that you had seen multiple days of peaceful protests that were focused on entirely legitimate concerns of these communities in Baltimore.”
“Led by clergy and community leaders, and they were constructive and they were thoughtful, and frankly, didn’t get that much attention,” he continued. “And one burning building will be looped on television over and over and over again, and the thousands of demonstrators who did it the right way, I think, have been lost in the discussion.”
“The overwhelming majority of the community in Baltimore, I think, handled this appropriately. Expressing real concern and outrage over the possibility that our laws were not applied evenly in the case of Mr. Gray,” Obama concluded. “And that accountability needs to exist and I think we have to give them credit.” (H/T WZ)
Oh, well, it’s just a simple building fire in downtown Baltimore. Carry on, then!
The New York Daily News painted a slightly different picture, reporting that 15 buildings had been “torched,” which didn’t count other more minor fires. In addition, over 100 vehicles were destroyed.
While the majority of people protesting Freddie Gray’s death did so in a peaceable, lawful manner, Obama telling his constituents to treat the violence as if it were two or three ruffians that set a small fire and broke a window or two is essentially asking Americans to disbelieve their lying eyes.
We’ve all seen the photos of scores of people standing on top of totaled police cars, or looters scampering out of a CVS. This is not isolated delinquency. This is a riot.
The people of Baltimore, Mr. President, deserve a leader who will act, not one who will patronize them. It’s time that you stood up and acknowledged the situation for what it is.
