In the recent weeks, we have seen NBA players such as Kobe Bryant and LeBron James wearing t-shirts donning the phrase ‘I Can’t Breathe’ in response to the failed indictments for the deaths of Michael Brown and Eric Garner.
So, in response to the controversial apparel, one entrepreneur, who also happens to be an Indiana police officer, has made a t-shirt in response, and it is epic.
Mishawaka Police Corporal Jason Barthel made the t-shirt to show that the police are there for the people and to put a positive spin on law enforcement, instead of the negative.
Barthel stated in an interview with the Daily Herald:
“We are not here to do anything negative to the public. We’re here to protect the public and we want you to breathe easy knowing that the police are here to be with you and for you and protect you.”
However, this shirt has not come without its own controversy. South Bend’s District Council President Oliver Davis spoke to the New York Daily News, saying, “We believe that people should be able to breathe easy no matter what they’re doing. Police should not take the right to breathe into their own hands.”
Barthel sees it differently and feels that the message he is trying to convey is one of unity and not division.
“The problem is we have a lot of people who are trying to create problems between the citizens and the people who try to protect them.” He continued, “My goal is to create a new brand, and that brand is going to continue to evolve into a sense of bringing people together.”
What do you think of the shirt? Would you wear it?
