Previously Deported Child Molester/Drunk Driver Arrested In California

Border Patrol agents arrested a Mexican sex offender Saturday near La Joya.

Agents arrested 49-year-old Efrain Torres-Abundis on Saturday, according to the federal criminal complaint against him.

“The defendant claims to have illegally entered the United States on April 30, 2016, near Hidalgo, Texas,” according to the criminal complaint. “Record checks revealed the defendant was formally deported/excluded from the United States on April 14, 2014, through Laredo, Texas.”

Torres-Abundis is a low-risk sex offender registered with the Texas Department of Public Safety.

In September 2011, a judge sentenced Torres-Abundis to four years parole for indecency with a child by sexual contact, according to the Department of Public Safety registry.

Torres-Abundis also has a criminal record in Hidalgo County, including:

On Dec. 6, 2007, he pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated, a third-degree felony. Torres-Abundis had been convicted of drunken driving at least twice before 2007.

On Dec. 13, 2011, he pleaded guilty to possession of a controlled substance, a state jail felony.

Magistrate Judge Peter E. Ormsby ordered Torres-Abundis held without bond.

An attorney for Torres-Abundis couldn’t immediately be reached for comment Tuesday.
