A loaded Glock pistol belonging to a dignitary protection officer was reportedly found in the bathroom of U.S. Rep. John Boehner’s Speaker’s Suite in the U.S. Capitol, according to Roll Call.
The weapon was found by a 7- or 8-year-old child visiting the Ohio Republican’s suite in March, Roll Call reported. Making matters worse, the gun didn’t have a traditional safety mechanism and could have been fired.
In January, a member of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s security detail left his pistol in a Capitol Visitor Center bathroom stall — an employee found the Glock pistol and magazine shoved in a toilet seat cover holder.
A third incident involved a Glock pistol left out in plain sight at the Capitol Police headquarters building and found by a janitor cleaning the building.
The officer assigned to McConnell was reportedly suspended for six days without pay, while the other two incidents are still under investigation, Roll Call reported.
“The Department takes very seriously all breaches of Department rules and has established policies that address such matters,” Lt. Kimberly Schneider, a Capitol Police spokeswoman, told Roll Call in an email.
“Each disciplinary matter is thoroughly investigated and reviewed, employees are held accountable for their conduct, and they are provided due process in adjudicating these matters.”
