A 22-year-old man from Georgia has migrated to Minneapolis and struck a nerve with his new neighbors. His name is Abdullah Rashid and he’s wandering around a neighborhood that’s inhabited by mostly Somalians, and he’s essentially giving them orders. Or, as some might call them, forceful suggestions. Or maybe they’re friendly suggestions. I suppose it depends on how you look at it. Regardless, the suggestions he’s trying to impose on fellow residents in Minneapolis are based on Islam and he’s trying to impose rules that potentially originate from Sharia Law upon the residents. The other people who live in the area, some who are Muslim, and some who are not, are not very fond of this man and his forceful nature.
Via Star Tribune:
“Abdullah Rashid, 22, a Georgia native who moved to Cedar-Riverside last year, has been making the rounds in the Somali-dominated neighborhood, telling people not to drink, use drugs or interact with the opposite sex. If he sees Muslim women he believes are dressed inappropriately, he approaches them and suggests they should wear a jilbab, a long, flowing garment. And he says he’s recruiting others to join the effort.”
It seems as though the Muslims in that area are striking down his efforts to police them. While they may be Muslim, even they don’t appreciate this man telling them what to do. There’s plenty of Islamic women in America who don’t dress in full garbs and cover everything but their eyes. I can’t imagine what a summer is like wearing a head to toe garment in black, nor could I imagine being oppressed by other people in my same religion.
Other Muslims have spoken out against this man, most importantly, a spokesperson from CAIR.
“What he’s doing is wrong and doesn’t reflect the community at all, said Jaylani Hussein, executive director of the Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR).”
“Minneapolis police received reports in February from concerned residents who saw Rashid in a dark green uniform that said “Muslim Defense Force” and “Religious Police” and had two flags associated with ISIS and other terrorist groups.”
Police reports suggest that he’s parading around town while dressed in a militant looking outfit stating that it represents the “Muslim Defense Force” or the “Religious Police” and I’m wondering what that’s all about. Muslims don’t need a defense force. No one really bothers the Muslim folks as long as they’re not bothering anyone. Most people in our country are very civil towards each other and welcoming of differences. What does someone need a religious police for? Between the Catholic church pedophiles and the Islamic barbary and oppression – I don’t know what’s worse! If anything, we need to police them for the horrible things they do. No religion should police its people. The people should police the religion to ensure they’re not doing terrible things like touching underage boys or marrying underage girls – the two things that Catholicism and Islam have in common.
Further reports state that Rashid once tried to attain a permit to carry a firearm, but due to his background laced with criminal activity or run-ins with the police, the permit was denied. He apparently has a few more run-ins than you’re supposed to have. He also has a history of being labeled with mental illness. If that has been diagnosed professionally, then one should not be eligible to carry a firearm. However, if he wants to carry a weapon, then he’ll just buy a gun on the street and carry it anyway. No denial of licensure will stop someone from doing something.
“Rashid, who was previously known as Devon James Miller, converted to Islam in 2009. He said he first started the religious police group in Georgia in 2013, and wants to grow it internationally.
He married a Somali-American woman, who had recently moved from Wyoming to Minneapolis, in 2015. They moved to Cedar-Riverside in 2016.
In late 2016, he applied for a permit to carry a handgun, which was denied by the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office, saying there was evidence that he is a danger to himself and others if allowed a permit to carry a gun.”
Seems like Rashid needs to chill out with his militant style of policing residents into following his religious orders. When other Muslims shut you down, then that’s when you know you’re doing something wrong.
