A Australian Senator has taken the stand and is not backing down when calling out Muslims. Seems like this is not only an American issue. Senator Pauline Hanson is the leader of the One Nation party and she recently made a public statement where she said that Australia,
“Is in danger of being swamped by Muslims. Resulting it our people living under Sharia Law.”
Unless of course she says Australia radically changes its immigration policy. It was her maiden speech in the Senate as a new public servant. She claimed that Islam has a hyper masculine culture which is utterly incompatible with Australian society. Furthermore, she said that migrants who are there but have yet to assimilate should go back to where they came from. She said,
“If it would be of any help, I’ll take you to the airport and wave you goodbye with sincere best wishes.”
“Our leaders continue to tell us to be tolerant and to embrace the good Muslims. But how should we tell the difference? There is no sign saying ‘good Muslim’ or ‘bad Muslim’. How many lives will be lost or destroyed trying to determine who is good and who is bad?”
Hanson is a former member of the centre-right Liberal Party. This party is the one that founded One Nation. It is a largely anti-establishment group that pursues policies from the old party. In 2003 she was sent to jail on a fraud conviction but was released merely eleven weeks later when the conviction was overturned on appeal.
Four members of their party were elected to the Federal Senate which has been the best result the party has even seen. The rise in popularity of One Nation is seen as a rebuke to Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull whose perceived as a progressive politician after ousting conservative Tony Abbott in a party coup last year.
The Australian Sun wrote the following,
“When Hanson gave her maiden speech in the House of Representatives 20 years and four days ago, Liberals boycotted it. This time they do not dare. Hanson is too powerful, with her four Senate votes and huge popularity – not to mention her scars. Turnbull’s nightmare has a new chapter. How can he repudiate what she says, other than to say it is not wise to say what in many respects is either the truth or the sentiment of so many Australians, most of them too scared until now to say so?”
The rise in nationalist politicians goes beyond American borders and appears to be going on right in our neighbor and friends back yard too. Perhaps in the next ten to twenty years we will see them as a major political force to be reckoned with.
