The failure of the new healthcare bill to be voted on yesterday was a massive setback for Congressional Republicans. It was the second time this week it was pulled from the floor because they failed to get enough support to get it to pass. Because of this Speaker Paul Ryan might end up leaving his position as Speaker of the House.
President Trump did everything in his power to negotiate a better deal in order to get the healthcare bill to be voted on. A day before the bill was yanked from the floor the White House met with members of the Freedom Caucus who threatened to vote no. But the administration’s attempts to edit the bill more to their liking failed.
One of the major complaints was that the bill was Obamacare-lite and carried too many of the provisions from the Affordable Care Act. Now people are calling Paul Ryan a Republican in name only. Which means his seat as Speaker is threatened. Representative Trey Gowdy is now being considered for the position.
Gowdy famously chaired the Benghazi special House committee and went on attack mode against Hillary Clinton, Eric Holder, and James Comey. He could be the more conservative leader that could bring consensus to this Congress.
A source close to the Trump administration said the following about Paul Ryan,
“This is another example of the staff not serving the president well and the weakness of the Paul Ryan speakership. This calls into question once again the speaker’s commitment to supporting Donald Trump and his agenda. Speaker Ryan proved today that he does not have the best interests of the President at heart. He sold out the president and showed his word can be taken with a grain of salt. There is only one course of action that should be taken to move past this catastrophe and that is the swift removal of Paul Ryan from the speakership.”
Even if the President doesn’t like him he can’t fire him. The Speaker is voted on by members of the House. Certainly the President can try to rally support to appoint a new Speaker. But it is arrogant to talk as if he has the power to oust him when he doesn’t have the authority to.
Ryan’s job isn’t to support the President it is to support the American people.
