A woman was arrested by French police after she was suspected of throwing acid on the face of four American women who were walking in the Marseille main train station in France. All of the victims at the Gare de Marseille-Saint-Charles train station were in their 20s. The details were released by an anonymous source from the prosecutor’s office who spoke to the Associated Press.
Two of the female victims had corrosive liquid sprayed in their face and one has a possible eye injury as a result. Two of the others were treated for shock at the hospital and all of them were hospitalized as a result.
Two of the others were treated for shock at the hospital. All of the victims were hospitalized as a result of the attack. Fox News was able to confirm to French authorities the attack was not terror related.
Fox News reported the following,
“No other information on where the U.S. tourists were from was released. Marseille is a port city in southern France that is closer to Barcelona than Paris. The city is just over three hours away from Paris by train. French police said they thwarted an imminent “terror attack” in April. Two suspected radicals were arrested on suspicion of preparing to “carry out an imminent, violent action” on French territory.”
The Daily Mail reported a more in-depth story,
“The horrifying attack took place shortly after 11am at the Gare de Marseille-Saint-Charles station, where the party from the US was preparing to board a train. The 41-year-old attacker used a cleaning substance containing hydrochloric acid that she is thought to have picked up from a local DIY store.
After carrying out the assault, the woman displayed photos of her own burns, allegedly picked up in an earlier incident.‘Two American women aged 20 were hit in the face, while the other two were sprayed in the legs, and were mainly suffering from shock,’ said a source close to the case.‘The two with facial injuries were taken to hospital, while the others were treated at the scene. They were also aged 20 or 21. The attacker wanted to show off photographs of her own injuries.
‘She was arrested at the scene and faces charges. She displayed clear signs of suffering from deep psychological problems.’ According to witnesses, no slogans were shouted out during the attack, and it was not thought to be terrorist related. Prosecutors have opened a criminal enquiry, while none of those involved have yet been named.
A spokeswoman for the prosecutor office said two of the tourists have been injured in the face and one of them has a possible eye injury. She said all four of the tourists have been hospitalized, two of them for shock. The Americans were thought to be on their way from the southern Mediterranean city to Paris.
Four emergency services vehicles arrived at the station, which was packed on a Sunday morning at the tail-end of the holiday season. Paris remains under a State of Emergency following a string of terrorist attacks carried out by Islamic State and Al-Qaeda operatives over the past two years.Security at transport hubs including rail stations has been massively stepped up because of threats by the groups to target them.
Corrosive substances are increasingly being used as weapons in Europe, including in Britain, where there were 450 such attacks in London alone in last year. Acid-based products are easy to purchase, and can be paid for in cash, so there is no trace of who bought them.”
USA Today had a different perspective and reported the following,
“In previous incidents in Marseille, a driver deliberately rammed into two bus stops last month, killing a woman, but officials said it wasn’t terror-related. In April, French police say they thwarted an imminent “terror attack” and arrested two suspected radicals in Marseille just days before the first round of France’s presidential election. Paris prosecutor Francois Molins told reporters the two suspects “were getting ready to carry out an imminent, violent action” on French territory. In January 2016, a 15-year-old Turkish Kurd was arrested after attacking a Jewish teacher on a Marseille street. He told police he acted in the name of the Islamic State group.”
Fox News relayed from French authorities that the attack was apparently not terror related.
While this may not be treated as a terrorist attack, it certainly is something to be concerned about. It shows the increasing level of lack of safety for Americans abroad. Whether it is in England, France, Spain, Germany, or Sweden, it seems lately that Americans have become less and less safe as time has gone on. This is an unacceptable thing to have continue.
Like a Roman citizen once was, an American should never be harmed while traveling overseas and anyone who does harm them should be treated with the full force of the law. Actions must have consequences if we intend on making the world safer, especially for Americans. With a President like Trump, these types of senseless attacks will never go unnoticed like they might have under former administrations. The safety of all Americans is President Trump’s first priority.
