DETROIT (WJBK) –Detroit police say they are investigating a fatal shooting on Detroit’s west side.

Police say a black male wearing a brown Carhart jacket walked up to a man shoveling snow and shot him in the head.

The shooting happened in the 6900 block of Faust Avenue, which is near the intersection of Warren Avenue and the Southfield Freeway.

Chris Graham works at Star Auto Wash nearby and he says he heard the deadly shots. When he turned, he saw the 34-year-old victim, who had been shoveling his driveway, fall to the ground. Immediately, he rushed over.

“We called EMS and it was taking them forever. I had to figure out where he was shot to see if i could do something for him,” Graham said.

He checked the victim’s pulse and rolled him onto his back. That’s when he realized the man had been shot in the face. He tried to give him CPR and then he noticed the cell phone nearby. The phone was still connected and a woman’s voice could be heard on the other end of the line.

“He was on the phone with either his daughter or niece, I’m not sure,” Graham said. “I ran up to him immediately and the phone was still on. She heard my voice. She was talking to him and she tried to make peace with him.”

The ambulance was on its way and Graham tried to keep the guy alive but he was starting to fade even before the emergency responders could get there. He said about 20 seconds before the ambulance arrived, he was gone.

While Detroit Police are not releasing the mans name, they say they are gathering evidence and possible surveillance video of the shooter at a nearby auto shop. Graham says he wishes he could have done more and wishes someone could have done more – to save him.

“We need more police officers and more EMS. That’s what we need. That’s all it comes down to.”
