President Donald Trump follows his own set of rules, beholden to nobody but the American people who voted for him. As such, he’s a far different Commander-in-Chief than his predecessor and often comes across with humility and appreciation for people that we haven’t seen in eight years under an arrogant leader. Recently, he was caught in photograph following a meeting with the Argentine President Mauricio Macri and his wife, Juliana Awada, that captured what he did in a split second that made him an immediate Internet sensation for a whole new reason.
Following his meeting with the Argentine leader and his wife, the Trumps escorted the couple out of the White House. As is customary, a Marine was standing in full salute outside the door to show honor to both presidential couples, and probably had been in this stiff stance for quite some time, not knowing when they would emerge. Holding attention for quite some time can become exhausting, as
“I can still remember the long waits in the rain, snow, sunshine, and the darkness at the position of attention in formation. The backs of the knees and calves begin to ache first. Then the back muscles tense and begin to spasm. Finally, you feel almost as if your feet have left your body,” the author explained. “In the armed forces, standing for many hours at a time in place can be somewhat fatiguing. For some, it’s downright debilitating.”
Our president didn’t have to serve time in the military to realize and respect this about servicemembers, as he has a deep appreciation for the military that Barack Obama never exuded — in fact, only showed the opposite. Which is why this rare moment caught on camera struck a chord with millions of Americans across the country.
President Trump broke typical protocol to show his gratitude for the Marine who was awaiting their exit. “The Marine had just opened the limousine doors as Argentine President Mauricio Macri and his wife Juliana Awada, said goodbye to the White House on Thursday,” the Daily Mail reported. It was in this moment that Trump briefly broke away from his guests and turned toward the Marine and gave him a double pat on the back, showing his authentic appreciation for him standing in salute for them.

“The Marine didn’t react to Trump’s gesture, and there’s a good reason for that,” IJ Review reported. “According to MARSOC operator Sean Conner, whose brother served at Camp David on the presidential detail:
“You’re trained to stand for more than six hours, and you don’t break discipline.”
While some referred to what Trump did in this moment as “funny” and even “awkward,” it was an immense improvement in respect for the armed services compared to a Barack Obama’s vrial moment with a Marine.
While holding an umbrella over Barack Obama’s disrespectful head, an honorable Marine didn’t break character either, which showed some great restraint. The two pictures of the past and former presidents shows the huge difference between how the two regard the one constant in both photographs — our soldiers who show respect and honor to duty no matter what.

It’s often said that “a picture is worth 1000 words,” but these two images speak volumes beyond that. Barack Obama’s response to seeing a soldier was to treat him has a bellman, saying “Hold my umbrella,” while on the contrary, President Trump’s unspoken message and body language thanked this hero for his service. What the president did the other day was refreshing to see which is sad, only because it was missing from the White House for two terms and never should have been.
Trump has made showing appreciation to these men and women, who are the lifeblood of our nation, important again. He didn’t just speak for himself and Melania in this gesture, he represented every proud American who don’t disregard the sacrifice of those who wear this uniform and defend our freedoms.
Over the past eight years, Obama made our military weaker than ever. President Trump is on track to restore the world’s greatest military power and a time when it couldn’t be more important.
