Trump took to Twitter Tuesday to give his opinion on the Guantanamo Bay situation. “There should be no further releases from Gitmo. These are extremely dangerous people and should not be allowed back onto the battlefield.” Trump tweeted.
It was unclear what motivated Trump’s recent tweet, but President Barack Obama tried throughout his Presidency to close down the detention camp, which opened in 2001. While George Bush Jr. was in office (2001-2009) the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay was opened as a prison that houses extremely dangerous criminals like terrorists and has housed hundreds of terrorists and criminals through the years it’s been open. Critics of the prison have argued that the prison abuses the human rights of prisoners since they are jailed there without trial. Though it is still in operation, less than 100 prisoners remain there. In December, the New York Times reported that the Obama administration plans to move 17 to 18 of these criminals to other countries before he leaves officer. Obama will be leaving 41 or 42 prisoners at the prison for Trump when he enters the White House. The U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay is a prison that houses extremely dangerous criminals like terrorists and Obama plans
Trump does not agree with Obama’s actions to transfer prisoners and has even once pledged to “load it up with some bad dudes.” Trump has no plans on shutting down Guantanamo bay. Of course, Obama is very much aggressive about his personal opinion on keeping to military prison open. Obama says the use of the prison “is contrary to our values” and “undermines our standing in the world.” Has Obama forgotten that the Prison holds criminals and known Terrorist? These are men who couldn’t care less about values and morals. Yet Obama is still frustrated that he hasn’t been able to close down Guantanamo Bay during his Presidency.
In November he held a press conference, acknowledging that he had not fulfilled his promise to close down the prison, he did find a small amount of success in being able to transfer some Criminals, reducing the population of the prison. “With respect to Guantanamo, it is true that I have not been able to close the darn thing,” Obama said. Whatever the plans are for Guantanamo Bay, we trust that Trump will be responsible for keeping dangerous terrorists and criminals off our streets and safely behind bars. Trump will be successful where Obama has failed on fighting terrorism and being aggressive toward those that wish to do us harm. If this means keeping Guantanamo Bay open, then so be it.
