Further bolstering his image as a populist, Donald Trump is now going after the most hated man in sports: Colin Kaepernick. The San Francisco 49ers quarterback was rightly booed as he ran onto the field last night, as he refused to stand for the national anthem yet again.
That time, there were hundreds of veterans in attendance. There are veterans defending Kaepernick’s right to freedom of speech, but that doesn’t mean they don’t think he’s a putz. Donald Trump spoke to veterans last night at the American Legion’s national convention in Cincinnati.
“We will be united by our common culture, values and principles, becoming one American nation,” he stated. “One country, under one Constitution, saluting one American flag, and always saluting it.”
He continued with a comment directed at Kaepernick. “The flag all of you helped to protect and preserve — that flag deserves respect, and I will work with the American Legion to help to strengthen respect for our flag,” he continued. “You see what’s happening. It’s very, very sad.”
This isn’t the first time that Trump had addressed the footballer, as the Conservative Tribune reported:
These comments followed what Trump had said earlier this week on “The Dori Monson Show,” when he urged Kaepernick to take a hike.
“I think it’s a terrible thing, and you know, maybe he should find a country that works better for him,” he said. “Let him try. It’s not gonna happen.”
As the writer at Conservative Tribune goes on to note, only in America can you claim to be oppressed and yet have this kind of freedom to protest. Had he tried to pull this stunt in a country like Iran, he’d risk execution. Can you imagine someone in ISIS occupied territory trying to protest praying five times a day? The right to peacefully protest is not something that the oppressed face.
Stunts like those of Kaepernick’s must be bitter-sweet for veterans. They fought and died for his freedom – and along with that came his freedom to be an idiot.
