If you want to see Exhibit A of why socialized medicine is a disaster, look no further than the scandal surrounding the Veteran’s Administration. As if sending them to fight overseas wasn’t tough enough, our veterans are forced to deal with government bureaucracy to receive healthcare, often at a price higher than they’d expect to pay monetarily.

According to a report from September of last year, the VA’s inspector general found that out of about 800,000 records stalled in the agency’s system for managing health care enrollment, there were more than 307,000 records that belonged to veterans who had died months or years in the past. The only thing worse than no healthcare, is government healthcare, it seems.

There have been a handful of stories reported in the past few years of veterans committing suicide in VA parking lots after being refused service, and there have even been stories of veterans committing suicide after being denied service from the VA’s suicide hotline for Christ’s sake.

Oh, and did I mention that it gets worse? Because it gets worse.

As the Federalist Papers reported:

Nearly 600 veterans who were being treated at a VA facility in Wisconsin may have been infected with several types of diseases due to violations of infection control protocol.

Some of those diseases include HIV, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C. The facility, in Tomah, Wisconsin, is in the process of notifying 592 veterans that they may have become infected, WEAU.com is reporting.

At a press conference Tuesday, acting medical center director Victoria Brahm said the dentist at the center was using his own equipment, then cleaning it and re-using it, a violation of VA regulations.

The facility’s rules require them to use sterile and disposable equipment.

Brahm said this was done for an entire year – from October 2015 through October 2016.

It only came to light when someone filling in as this dentist’s assistant noticed what was happening and reported it.

It’s truly pathetic that those who survived war in Iraq and Afghanistan are fighting their biggest battle in trying to get as much as decent healthcare.

The VA says it’s offering free screenings for all those veterans and will provide free medical treatment to anyone who tests positive for an infection, but given their history, how long are the waiting lists on that going to be?

Long enough to be fatal for some, inevitably.
