A Miami man accused of brutally killing his estranged partner in their South Beach condo spit on police as they escorted him to jail Friday, officials said.
Jonathan Alonso, 30, was charged Friday with first-degree murder in the death of 61-year-old Louis Piper, whose body was found stabbed and decomposing inside his 12th-floor Miami Beach condo Wednesday.
Neighbors said the couple lived together — although court records showed Piper once tried to evict Alonso from the high-rise apartment. The high-power finance executive also previously asked a court for a restraining order against his partner, Local 10 reported.
Alonso was arrested Friday when cops found him in a park. The officers put a mask on him because he kept spitting at them as they carted him off to jail, the Miami Herald reported.
Coworkers of Piper, who as a vice president for Bayview Asset Management, grew concerned when he didn’t show up to work earlier his week. After fielding worried calls from his colleagues, building employees at the Sunset Harbour South went to check on his unit on Wednesday.
They used a spare key to open the front door when no one answers — but Alonso quickly ran to the door to keep them out, police said.
The 30-year-old said he hadn’t seen his partner is a few days and closed the door. He left the building through the lobby with the couple’s pug, and when a doorman tried to ask more questions about the missing Piper, Alonso brushed him off and fled the property.
Suspicions condo employees called the cops, who broke into the unit and found a bloody crime scene. Piper’s body was found in a pool of blood in the bathroom. He had been stabbed multiple times, police said.
Police found Alonso in a park two days later. He had cuts on his body, his pockets were stuffed with Piper’s credit cards and he was still walking the pug, police said.
Officials took him in for questioning and put the put in the care of animal control officers.
Alonso has a long criminal history, including a conviction for cocaine possession in 2008 and marijuana charges in 2013. Piper filed to evict Alonso from Piper from the condo last year, according to court records.
