The start of a new year is the perfect time to look back at highlights that make us proud to be conservative — and one of those is the brilliant Trey Gowdy. The fiery congressman had many great quotes over the past months, but one of his finest moments was a three-minute lashing of liberal journalists during the Benghazi hearing.
Gowdy begin the special hearing by quoting none other than Barack Obama.
“‘We will not waver in our commitment to see that justice is done for this terrible act in Benghazi and make no mistake: justice will be done,’” said the lawmaker.’
“That was the president of the United States, over a year ago.”
Trey Gowdy then expressed his frustration that Obama did not follow up on his own promise of justice.
“No one has been arrested. No one has been prosecuted. No one has been brought to justice. We don’t even have access to the witnesses,” said Gowdy.
The South Carolina congressman directed his frustration at members of the media, who had ignored the Benghazi story for far too long.
“I’m going to ask you some questions,” Gowdy said.
“And if you can’t answer these questions, then I’ll leave you to draw whatever conclusion you want to draw about whether the media has provided sufficient oversight.”
He continued, “Can you tell me why Chris Stevens was in Benghazi the night he was killed? Do you know? Does it bother you whether or not you know why Chris Stevens was in Benghazi?”
“Do you know why we were the last flag flying in Benghazi – after the British had left and the Red Cross had been bombed?” Gowdy asked.
The former prosecutor asked questions that have been on the minds of many Americans.
“Do you know why requests for additional security were denied?”
“Do you know the origin of this mythology that it was spawned as a spontaneous reaction to a video?” Gowdy asked, referring to the YouTube video that was used as a scapegoat by the Obama administration.
“Do you know where that started? Do you know how we got from no evidence of that to that being the official position of the administration?”
Trey Gowdy wrapped up his verbal lashing with a promise that his committee would do its best to hold the Obama administration responsible.
“In conclusion, Congress is supposed to provide oversight, the voters are supposed to provide oversight, and you are supposed to provide oversight,” he said.
“That’s why you have special liberties and that’s why you have special protections.”
Gowdy is right. The media has a responsibility to hold those in power accountable. But today’s media has wholly abdicated that role, choosing instead to promote and protect Barack Obama and his administration.
Trey Gowdy, however, is going to do whatever he can to force them to focus on the president’s corruption and lawlessness.
