VIDEO: White House admits Obama, Clinton exchanged emails on her private account

White House spokesman Josh Earnest acknowledged Monday that President Obama and Hillary Clinton had exchanged emails throughout her four-year tenure tenure as secretary of state.

However, the president told CBS News Sunday that he first heard about Clinton’s use of a private email account when it broke on the news.

Was he just unobservant? Not according to Earnest.

“The point the president was making was not that he didn’t know Secretary Clinton’s email address — he did” Earnest said, about to spin Obama’s comments.

“But he was not aware of the details of how that email address and that server had been set up, or how Secretary Clinton and her team were planning to comply with the Federal Records Act.”

The fact that Obama was aware that Clinton had been sending emails for four years using a “clinton.com” address rather than “state.gov” should have set off alarm bells to the president — especially for a post as sensitive as the secretary of state.

But over and above that, this is not what the president said Sunday.

He was asked when he’d first learned that Clinton was using “a private email system outside the U.S. government for official business” during her time as secretary of state, according to CBS news.

“The same time everybody else learned it, through news reports,” Obama told CBS’ Bill Plante.
