(Fox News) A new report out of North Carolina reveals there are 145 illegal immigrants on the state’s voter rolls. Early voting started in the state Thursday.

The U.S. Senate race between incumbent Kay Hagan (D) and Thom Tillis (R) is one of the toss-up races that will determine which party controls the Senate.

The State Board of Elections said 145 people on the voting rolls are ineligible to vote. They were granted Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals status by the Obama administration.

More from the Winston-Salem Journal:

Josh Lawson, an SBOE spokesman, said that election officials found out about the number Tuesday night, after the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles ran a specific search for drivers with DACA licenses.

Letters from the SBOE will be sent to the 145 people asking for documentation that they are U.S. citizens, Lawson said.

More people who are ineligible because they are not U.S. citizens may be on the voter rolls.

Nearly 10,000 names on the rolls are tagged by the DMV as “legally present,” according to elections and transportation officials. But that doesn’t mean that all 10,000 are ineligible to vote at this time. These are license holders who were not U.S. citizens when they got a license.

They may have been green-card holders, foreign workers or foreign students, for example.

Most have become U.S. citizens since getting a license, according to an estimate by elections officials based on a sample of the overall list.

Peter Johnson Jr. discussed the situation on “Fox and Friends” with State Rep. Chris Millis (R), who called it a “tremendous travesty” that people who are not American citizens are on voter rolls.

Johnson and Millis then highlighted the fact that state officials are relying on the Department of Homeland Security to verify whether these are people who have become citizens.

“I’m highly skeptical of this current administration and whether these individuals truly are citizens of our state and nation,” said Millis.
