A man was kicked out of a Planet Fitness in Florida on two occasions for wearing t-shirts that denounce abortions.
Mike Amoroso is an avid pro-life supporter and has a number of t-shirts with anti-abortion messages. He wore one of the shirts recently to the Orange City Planet Fitness and a complaint was lodged, resulting in the staff telling him to change his shirt or leave, ABC affiliate WFTV reported.
“She told me, ‘I am very sorry. We have someone who is not happy with your shirt. Someone is offended by your shirt,’” Amoroso said. “I said, ‘You know I wear them all the time.’ She said, ‘You’ll have to leave,’ and I left.”
WFTV reported that Amoroso wore a “softer” anti-abortion shirt the following day, thinking it would be less offensive, and again was told to leave.
Life News picked up on the story and contacted the corporate offices, who passed the buck back to the local facility, saying its gyms are independently owned and operated.
The company said in a statement:
“At Planet Fitness, we are committed to providing a comfortable and welcoming environment for everyone. The majority of Planet Fitness clubs, including this location in Orange City, FL, are owned and operated by individual franchisees. The dress code policy is enforced at the discretion of club staff and the local franchisee.”
Amoroso believes it’s a matter of freedom of speech, according to WFTV. He said he would not be deterred by the response to his t-shirts.
“I might wear them more,” he added.
