As shock, anger and debate raged Wednesday night following the decision not to indict a police officer whose use of a chokehold on a New York City man led to his death last summer, at least two people apparently thought the volatile situation was worth laughing at.
As WPIX-TV reporter Allison Kaden delivered a report about protests that followed the grand jury’s decision not to indict NYPD officer Daniel Pantaleo for the death of Eric Garner, a man and woman walked behind her and into the camera’s view to act out a mock chokehold on one another.
Unbeknownst to Kaden, the man, who was wearing a suit and tie, grabbed the woman around the neck as she put her hands in the air; the two proceeded to laugh and walk away.
Deadspin called the shocking display the “worst video bomb of the day (and week, and probably year, and maybe ever).”
It came just hours after a grand jury decided not to indict Pantaleo, who, according to his attorney, denied using a chokehold during his grand jury testimony. Instead, he said he used “a takedown move as he was taught in the [Police] Academy,” according to the New York Post.
