(Mad World News) One photo posted to Twitter by a woman in Turkey dressed in red stilettos, standing on top of the Quran was all it took for Turkish police to open a full investigation into the poster responsible for the picture, which ultimately resulted in an arrest.
The social media user who goes by the online handle [email protected] on Twitter, posted a photo to the site of her feet clad in glossy red heels disrespecting the Muslim holy book by placing it under foot. Melih Gokcek, the mayor of the Turkish town of Ankra, took notice and filed a complaint against her, Agence France-Presse reported.
“No one has a right to insult our religion,” Gokcek wrote on Twitter, accompanied by the woman’s photo post. Turkey is a predominantly Muslim country where the divide between secularists and religious conservatives runs wide.
According to the Huffington Post, Gokeck has held the mayoral office for 20 years and is known to make frequent derogatory remarks about women. He is a member of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) party, which has religious roots but espouses a moderate agenda.
The offending poster, presumed to be in her mid-30’s, identifies herself as an atheist on the social media site and was arrested this week in Instanbul on suspicion of blasphemy and inciting religious hatred. Authorities seized her computer and cellphone during the arrest.
The woman’s visual statement was done in a way that combines many offensive actions in the Middle East, beginning with showing her feet, which are considered to be unclean in the culture. Additionally, standing or putting shoes on top of something is an outward sign of disrespect. The Quran states that only those who are clean should touch the sacred text, and it should not be held below the waist, including on one’s lap.
This woman is brave, and her efforts to take a stand against the stifling beliefs in her country should be applauded.
